Poppy seed (Papaver somniferum L.) – blue, white

Main area for growing poppy seed is in region middle and east Europe. Poppy contains high quality proteins, group of B vitamins, almost 50% of fíbre and essential oils. Main usage is in bakery industry, for fillings and as a traditional ingredient in Czech cuisine.

Caraway seed (Carum carvi)

One of most common spices in Europe – used since ancient times. Used in bakery industry, meat processing industry and have many other applications.

Buckwheat (Fagopyrum aesculentum ( L.) Moench)

Buckwheat is established in botanical part as Polygonaceae. Because of similar process in agro process it is listed as grains sometimes. Buckwheat seeds are used for food industry with specific taste and dietetic parameters. Quality is guided by EU food regulations. Seed are often hulled – either mechanically or by thermical method.

Millet seed (Panicum miliceum L.)

Seeds are small with high glow. Part of production is used as dietetic food and main part is used as part of exotic births feeding. From quality point of view you need to focus on moisture, impurities and purity.

Flax seed (Linum usitatissimum)

Flax seed in Czech republic is not so popular with farmer and total acreage is decreasing annually. It is pity as flax seed is famous for its health and oil parameters (which is used for technical application as well).

Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum)

Plant is finishing growth at the end of the September when Silymarin is created in the seeds. This substance was marked as one of key ingredients for liver cleaning procedures and for regeneration of liver tissue. Silymarin was recognised as an antioxidant; it helps protect liver cells from substances which may cause inflammation of the liver because the endurance of cells membrane shows higher potential when blocking toxins. It is said the best way is to eat seeds directly – however, seeds are very hard and it is recommended to crush them first. Seed are suitable for direct human consumption but may be use as feeding for horses as well.

Mustard seed

Seed of mustard plant is used in food industry for making mustard sauce. It is also one of most common intercrop plant used for green fertilising. There are three main variety of mustard seed:

  1. White mustard seed (Sinapis alba L.) – originated in Mediterrain area. Has yellow-ish colour, no shine. It is used as seed and, as well, as spice.
  2. Black mustard seed (Brassica Nigra L.) – plant is little bit higher, seeds are having dark red-brown colour-
  3. Indian mustard seed (Brassica juncea Cos.) – seeds are light brow in colour. It is grow mainly in India, China and Russia.
